20 Hours

Just found this.

To be eligible for student Sécu you have to take 20 hours of class a week. That is a TON of class time.

I have that answer, at least.

Aaaannnddd, Alliance Française has a Medical French class that would fill 9 hours a week. For those who may think (ie my dad) that this would be a ridiculous way to waste a year when I should be pursuing my medical studies.

Ok, so first of all, yay for job prospects! Second, I would also tell you that it is indeed possible to sign up for classes, pay and get your student card and then never attend a single class. That being said, if you would feel too bad about that, you could go to a few of your classes(the ones you find most interesting, for ex.) Third, 1050 euros per month is doable, I've definitely gotten by on less. You also would hopefully get some CAF and then if you had time, you could maybe tutor/babysit/etc. I think if you really want to do it, then you should go for it! The whole parent issue is something I struggle with myself and though I definitely plan on heading back one day, I want to profit from my time here and I know that as sad as it makes them that I'm not there, they want me to be happy and live out this experience to its' fullest. Et voila, la fin!

Hey Mir...

I physched to hear that you'll be staying on for another year-- So a big CONGRATS to you!!
Now.... does this mean more travel?? Like, Transylvania, here we come??!!! That would be great!
Anyhow, I'm just glad you are staying. It was on my mind...
Take care and hope to see you soon...

if you just enroll as a regular student (not language classes) then they don't count the hours per week, you'll just be considered a full time student if you're in a degree seeking program. for example my master's program was full time but only 5 hours a week of class! i had to take their Secu the first year but had a hard time negotiating my way out of it the second year (because i had a full time job the second year as a lectrice i would have been doubling up on Secu so i thought i'd save myself the 200e...)
so it depends on what you're looking at: languages classes vs. fulltime student in a degree program...
hope that helps a little!

Leah - thanks for all the helpful ideas. We're only young and single and able to live abroad once, right?

Leesa - thanks! Of course we would be travelling! I want to show you how my ancestors lived in Transylvania over 100 years ago! It hasn't changed!

Milk Jam - this is all SUPER helpful, thanks so much! Now if only I could find a 5 class hour masters program that wouldn't require me to write a thesis...

masters without a thesis? good luck! lol that's why there's only 5 hours of class, you're supposed to work on your thesis the rest of the time ;-)
